Favorite Summer Memory...

When Colleen over at Keeping her Cool asked me if I wanted to play along on the latest blog hop...Favorite Summer Memory -
I said SURE!

After all, the last Blog Hop I did with this group was so. much. fun!!

And favorite summer memory?
Who doesn't have a couple dozen of those?
So...what is my favorite summer memory?

...hmmmmmm....

Good question...

I'd have to say that as a kid, growing up...I loooved fireworks with my Dad. I grew up in a very small North Dakota town, where fireworks were (are?) legal...and every year, a couple of weeks before the 4th of July...We'd head to Wally's Supermarket where they had the most unbelievable selection of fireworks right smack dab in the middle of the grocery store.

We didn't have much money growing up - but my Dad ALWAYS splurged on the BIG BOX of fireworks...The $100 box ~ which to my family, was like the $10,000 box. We'd start out with the little guys...snaps (are those the things you throw at the sidewalk? or the floor next to the Cat if you were 1 of my after-college roommates...), then we'd do the little tanks and the flower bomb thingys that zig zagged around and changed colors...
Bottle rockets out of glass soda bottles and parachutes across the bridge across the river that ran through my back yard...because over there - you stood a chance of actually catching the parachute...

I loved to write my name in smoke with the smoke bombs (and I could swear those things lasted like 10 minutes when I was a kid! I bought some a couple of years ago...maybe 10 seconds? Harumpf!) and the sparklers...oh, the sparklers...

Our town put on a 4th of July Fireworks display...oh how I loved lying in the back of our old pick up truck with a blanket watching the fireworks...
And when we got home...we all sat in lawn chairs with our blankets while Dad lit off the big finale fireworks left in our box...

The roman candles would all be lined up in the dirt on the curb next to the street...

And always the one for show...he would use a blow torch to light them!
HaHAHa!

oh how I loved that man and the things he used to do to make life fun...

I wish our kids could have met their Grandpa...
I could TOTALLY see D lighting off fireworks with my Dad...

Perhaps this is the year to start making Fourth of July memories for our kids with their own dad?

What awesome memories, Darcie! While the kids make memories with their dad, it will also be a great time for you to share your memories of doing that cool stuff with their grandpa.

My dad was the same way--didn't have a lot of money, but splurged in the right places and knew how to up the excitement factor. I'm sorry your father has passed on--I don't know what I would do without mine. Very special--thanks for posting.

Yeah, what DID happen to fireworks over the years? There used to be so much "bang for the buck" (pun intended) and now they seem to fizzle out so quickly.

Great memories -- thank you for sharing!

I was reading GustGab this morning and your best memory of summer is also mine! I actually took Steve by where the gpa and gmas house was last time we were in Grafton and have been telling him about gpas fireworks box...I can rememeber him actually encouraging me to throw snaps AT the cat and taking me over to the bridge to set off bottle rockets into the water to make that "bloop" sound...man he loved it when they made that sound! I also remember him letting me light fireworks for the first time and someone *you* screaming "boom" behind me and scaring the crap out of me!!!
