MINNESOTA CULINARY CONNOISSEURS PREDICT
TOP FOOD TRENDS FOR 2015

New Cub® Foods Food Trends Forecast Predicts Minnesotans Will Continue to Consume
More Fresh, Local, Clean and Homemade Foods

Hotdishes Will Be Hot; Bacon and Doughnuts Will Fall out of Favor

MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 13, 2015 — Cub® Foods, a trusted local resource for fresh, quality food, recently polled Minnesota’s foodie elite to gather their insights on what hot, on-trend foods and cooking techniques will rise to prominence and please palates throughout the North Star state in 2015.

According to local food experts, the trend toward fresh, local and organic foods with “clean” ingredient lists is expected to continue to gain traction and become more mainstream this year. In what may be a surprising — and mildly controversial — prediction, they also say we’ll be eating less bacon, America’s favorite all-purpose pork product, and fewer doughnuts in 2015.

When it comes to home cooking, Minnesotans will be doing more cooking from scratch, and “throwback” items like hotdishes are expected to return to glory, as consumers take a page out of their parents’ and grandparents’ cookbooks.

“Beyond providing nourishment, food has a way of bringing us together and connecting us to our family, friends and community like nothing else,” said Mike Stigers, president of Cub Foods. “Since food preferences and tastes are ever evolving, gathering insights on the latest trends from foodies at the forefront of our local culinary scene helps us to anticipate and stay ahead of the changing needs of our customers.”

Here’s a sampling of some of the food trends local experts predict for 2015:

Hometown Favorites. Demand for natural and locally sourced foods shows no sign of slowing. Food experts predict that Minnesotans will seek even more responsibly sourced foods from local farms and growers.

Call of the Wild. Home cooks will increasingly embrace their inner caveman and cavewoman with high protein meals flush with grass-fed meats, seafood, nuts and fresh produce. As an offshoot of this, grass-fed beef and bison, and wild game such as venison, rabbit and duck will become more common features at the dining table.

It’s All About Those Veggies. Local food experts expect people to make a conscious effort to eat more fruits and veggies in 2015. Cauliflower, avocados and grapefruit will be hot, and look for Minnesotans to try more hybrid vegetables like broccoflower and discover little-known gems such as jicama.

Ancient Grains Continue Historic Run. While it may be hard to pronounce quinoa (KEEN-wah), this small but mighty grain packs a powerful punch of protein that is great for a side dish and in salads. Local experts predict lesser-known ancient grains — such as millet, freekeh, farro and amaranth — will be competing with quinoa for dinner plate real estate this year.

Hotdishes Are Hot! The beloved Minnesota comfort food will get a modern makeover as home chefs customize recipes and lighten them up with new, better-for-you ingredients and global flavors. These dishes are easy to make and ensure plenty of leftovers. Sriracha-Honey Tater Tot Hotdish anyone?

The Party Is at Our House. 2015 will be the “Year of the Dinner Party,” according to Minnesota food experts. Minnesotans will start experimenting with larger dinner parties and regular “supper clubs.” These events, however, will likely be more informal with a focus on smaller servings, comfort foods and great variety.

We Like It Hot. No, Really. Minnesotans might have a reputation for being spice adverse, but food experts see the demand for hot and spicy flavors heating up.

South of the Border. Latin American food will join Mexican as among Minnesotans’ favorite ethnic options in 2015. And according to one local food expert, it’s time to “Watch for Cuban.” Consumers also will seek out more Middle Eastern and Moroccan foods as their interest in dishes with unique spices and strong flavors continues to grow.

Move over Bacon. While there will always be a place for bacon in many beloved dishes, food experts say the nation’s borderline-obsessive love affair with the pork product is cooling to a more manageable level. It will still appear at breakfast, lunch and dinner, but bacon-infused everything will fall out of favor.

Sayonara Soda! Minnesotans will be drinking less of the sugary stuff and their “diet” counterparts this year. Instead they may discover drinks like Kombucha, a popular drink made with fermented tea and shrubs, and nonalcoholic fruit punches made with fruit vinegars. Once popular in Victorian times, these unexpected beverages are seeing a resurgence in popularity.

Home Grown. The trend toward healthier eating will inspire more Minnesotans to grow their own food at home or in a community garden. Experts also predict that pickling, canning and preserving will increase in popularity among home chefs in 2015.

Craft Craze. In another nod to all-things-local, Minnesotans will be drinking more local, craft beers, craft spirits, wines and local soda brands in 2015.

CUB® FOODS DEBUTS DIGITAL COUPONING PROGRAM
Online, Mobile Deals to Deliver Big Savings to In-Store Shoppers

STILLWATER, Minn., May 1, 2014 — Cub® Foods, a trusted hometown resource for fresh, quality foods, is offering customers an innovative, tech-savvy way to save money with the launch of its new digital e-couponing program.
Encouraging customers to “stop clipping and start clicking,” the program allows MY CUB REWARDS™ members to load valuable digital coupons available on Cub.com or the Cub Foods mobile app directly to their loyalty card to take advantage of savings on a wide variety of products throughout the store, including fresh produce, meats and seafood, and much more.

I recently got my own 'My Cub Rewards' Card.

Every time I was in the store...I kept thinking, well, I'm in a hurry, I'll get one next time.

Or...Is it even worth it? I'll just check out without one and go...

Finally I just did it. It was quick and painless, and took all of about 45 seconds to sign up. If you, like me, are a card carrying member of fifty dozen places and have a purse full of stuff like this, CUB® FOODS can look you up by phone number at the checkout - which I love!

Shortly after I signed up for the MY CUB REWARDScard,  before I even had a chance to investigate the mobile app ~ I received this email.

Who can't use $5 off their grocery bill?
Yes, you have to spend $55 to get the $5 off, but somehow, that happens to me every. time. I. go.
"I'm running in for bread!" I say...
And then I emerge with the a case of water, a box of cereal, a handful of frozen pizzas to quickly cook before our youth ball games, yogurt cups, a jar of peanut butter, a bag of oranges, and hopefully, if I remembered, the BREAD!

You can log in from the computer and add coupons from the weekly ad right to your card ~

Or you can get the app for your mobile phone, which was quick & easy to download.

Once members have loaded the digital coupons to their cards, they can use the card at the register.

The coupons they loaded will automatically apply to their purchase with one swipe of the card, saving time for customers and cashiers who traditionally scan physical paper coupons one by one. Savings will be printed on the customer’s receipt.

The Cub Foods mobile app and digital coupon features are also compatible with iPhone, including in Passbook, and Android devices.  It is available for free download in the iTunes App Store and Android Market.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to enhance the Cub Foods shopping experience with this new digital couponing program,” said Mike Stigers, president of Cub Foods. “The load-to-card system will provide our valued customers with a convenient new way to save on fresh, quality food, whether they’re planning their grocery list at home or using our mobile app on the go.”

To load digital coupons to their MY CUB REWARDS card, customers may visit Cub.com and log in to their account. If they do not have an active account, shoppers may register for the reward program on the website or in person at any Cub location.

Once logged in, users may access dozens of discounted items through the site’s Coupons or Weekly Ad Specials sections. By simply selecting a sale item and clicking the “Save to My Card” button, e-coupons will be instantly linked to their card for convenient in-store savings. Members can even create custom shopping lists featuring discounted items that sync with the card.
Cub fans away from their home computer or laptop can still load discounts to their rewards card with the Cub Foods mobile app through its eCoupons or Weekly Ad function.

While the new program gives customers an innovative new way to coupon, traditional paper coupons will still be available in-store and delivered directly to consumers each week.

NEW CUB® FOODS 2014 FOOD TRENDS FORECAST SAYS
MINNESOTANS WILL BUY MORE LOCAL WITH HEALTH IN MIND
Area Food Experts Predict Minnesotans Will Crave Healthier, Handheld, Local Fare
with a Dash of Purple Pride
MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 3, 2014 — Cub® Foods, a trusted local resource for fresh, quality food, recently polled Minnesota-based chefs, culinary experts, food critics, bloggers and food enthusiasts for key food trend predictions for 2014. Continued growth in demand for local and organic foods, as well as a focus on healthier food choices, especially those for kids, are predicted to be among the top food trends this year.  When it comes to specific foods, look for ancient grains like quinoa, along with kale and other “superfoods” to find their way onto more plates in the months ahead.
The 2014 Cub Foods Food Trends Forecast also shows that Minnesotans will pay more attention to portion sizes, snacking more, rather than eating full meals. This trend will also serve to reshape dinner parties as hosts focus on offering a variety of healthier options and taste experiences, moving from traditional full-course meals to small-plate, tapas-style affairs.
“Food trends are great indicators of broader social trends in our community,” said Darren Caudill, vice president of merchandising and sales for Cub Foods. “Our firsthand view into the grocery shopping habits and food preferences of local consumers allows us not only to respond to but to anticipate their evolving needs and interests.”
Predictions for the 2014 Minnesota food scene include:
Local, Farm-to-Table and Organic. Fresh and local, as well as organic foods are among the most significant trends, as the desire for simple, more natural and locally sourced foods continues to grow.Demand for gluten-free options will also increase.
Handheld and Healthy. Handheld, transportable meals and snacks will take new shape as people will seek healthier items with quality ingredients that they can tote along with them. From portable breakfast foods to lunchbox-sized items to fun and nutritious snacks for the whole family, on-the-go is the way to go.
Purple Pride Veggies. Several experts cited increasing interest and demand for purple vegetables such as purple green beans and purple carrots. Perhaps a fresh start for the Minnesota Vikings this year is driving the increased interest in purple veggies?
On the Rise. Ancient grains, kale, superfoods and greens will appear in more dishes. In addition, businesses that specialize in making one type of food or drink (e.g., cheese, distilleries) will gain popularity. We’ll also see more whole animal (nose to tail) served.
BIY (Brew It Yourself) Projects. Homebrewing continues to take hold in the Twin Cities as more people seek neighborhood acclaim as its master brewer. Look for more home dinner parties centered around pairing homebrews with food.
Small Is the New Big. Look for smaller servings to start nudging out bigger portions. Snacking will emerge as a replacement to traditional meals, particularly at lunch. Small party foods also will be big. Instead of sit-down dinners, demand will grow for healthy, yet tasty alternatives to traditional party fare for tasting and sampling.
Self-preservation. The home also becomes a food factory as more people experiment with emerging preparation techniques such as quick pickling, canning and smoking.
Marvelously Multicultural. Latin and Spanish ingredients and dishes are expected to be popular choices in the Twin Cities this coming year. Of course, they will be organic and healthy and, perhaps, presented as a fusion with another cultural flavor.
What’s for Mealtime? For breakfast, we’ll eat more eggs, and for lunch, we’ll experiment with unique, gourmet, artisan sandwiches.
